I’ve been doing a lot of spring cleaning lately. More than I ever wanted to do – organizing mom’s house to put on the market, cleaning out our lake cottage for short term rental, and doing the run-of-the-mill spring cleaning where I actually live. Would you believe it – in two of those three places (the two most often unoccupied), the mice are on a mission to enjoy the good life, in warmth and comfort. And I’m done with them. I mean it this time! 😄
You know where else pesky little gremlins live? In our minds with business clutter. Are you done with yours too?
Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home—your business needs a refresh, too! Decluttering, organizing, and making space for what truly works is key to staying efficient and aligned with your goals. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just know some things need to shift, now’s the time to take action.
Many of the business owners I work with—solo service providers who feel stuck underearning and overworking—have big dreams but struggle to reach them because of unnecessary clutter in their businesses. Whether it’s a plateau in revenue growth, getting bogged down in day-to-day operations, or feeling like work constantly bleeds into personal time, a little strategic business spring cleaning can work wonders!
You probably know by now that I like to break down business strategy into the business pillars, to help streamline your thought process. So, let’s go pillar by pillar and do a little business refresh.
1. Vision: Refresh Your Big Picture
Your vision is the foundation of your business, but is it still aligned with where you are now? Maybe when you started, your goals looked different. Maybe business (or life) has changed, and you need to course-correct.
✔ Take a moment to reflect—does your vision still excite and motivate you?
✔ Are you spending time on activities that move you toward that vision?
✔ If not, what adjustments need to be made to keep you aligned?
Many of my clients struggle to find time and resources to focus on business development because they’re stuck in the day-to-day grind. Realigning your vision will help you take control of your time and direct your energy where it matters most!
2. Services: Clear Out What’s No Longer Working
Not every service stays relevant forever. (Are you sensing the theme? I’m hitting it hard!) It’s easy to keep offering something just because you always have, but if it’s draining your energy or isn’t profitable, it’s time to reassess.
✔ Which services do you LOVE offering?
✔ Which ones feel like a drag, don’t align with your expertise, or aren’t bringing in revenue?
✔ Clearing out services that no longer fit makes room for exciting new offers.
If your revenue has hit a plateau, it might be time to update your services to better reflect your expertise and attract higher-value clients.
3. Operations: Organize Your Physical and Digital Space
A cluttered workspace leads to a cluttered mind. Whether it’s your office, your digital files, or your systems, a little organization goes a long way.
✔ Clear out and refresh your office—declutter, rearrange, or refresh your setup.
✔ Delete unused files, old emails, and outdated systems that slow you down.
✔ Review your workflow: Are there bottlenecks or unnecessary steps?
For business owners who feel overwhelmed by daily operations, streamlining these processes can free up valuable time to focus on growth.
4. Marketing & Sales: Cut the Clutter, Focus on What Works
Not all marketing strategies are created equal. If you’ve been trying a little bit of everything but not seeing results, it’s time to streamline.
✔ Review your marketing efforts—where are you seeing engagement and conversions?
✔ Cut out tactics that aren’t bringing in leads or sales.
✔ Simplify your messaging so you’re reaching the right audience with clarity.
Trying to market your business but feeling like you’re spinning your wheels? Simplifying your strategy will help you attract more ideal clients—without wasting energy on what doesn’t work.
5. Finances: Trim Unnecessary Expenses
Just like with personal finances, businesses can accumulate expenses that no longer serve them.
✔ Review your subscriptions, software, and recurring expenses—are you actually using them?
✔ Are there more cost-effective ways to get the same result?
✔ Can you reinvest those savings into higher-impact business activities?
If your profitability isn’t where you want it to be, clearing out unnecessary expenses will help you direct funds toward growth-focused initiatives.
6. Personal Management: Create More Space for What Matters
Last, but certainly not least! Time is your most valuable resource. If your schedule feels packed but not productive, take this opportunity to create more breathing room.
✔ Set boundaries: Where do you need to say no more often?
✔ Block off dedicated time for deep work. This year, I’ve been taking the last week of each month for project work instead of client calls. This simple schedule change has increased my productivity exponentially!
✔ Prioritize what fuels your success—whether that’s rest, strategy, or professional development.
For many solo business owners, work often carries over into personal life. Creating structure will help you reclaim your time so you can focus on what truly matters—both in business and in life.
Are You Working with the Right People?
There’s one important thing we are missing here—your ideal client. Yes, this often gets ignored, but it evolves as your business grows.
The people you worked with five years ago might not be the ones you want to work with now. And let’s be real—some clients can drain your energy instead of fueling your growth.
✔ Are there any clients who don’t align with your vision?
✔ Are certain clients metaphorically sucking the life out of you?
✔ Write down the attributes of your favorite clients—the ones who energize you, value your expertise, and align with your goals.
It may be time to let some go to make space for better opportunities! If you’re feeling stretched thin, reevaluating your client list can help you create a more fulfilling and profitable business.
